ENGLISH TENSES

Do you understand English Tenses? Can you use them correctly? I am sure that it’s not as easy as we think. It’s so complicated to learn it, isn’t it?
There are 16 ( sixteen ) Tenses in English, and I want to present you 5 of them for you to understand how to differ them.

1. Present Simple Tense
This tense tells you about our daily activities at the present time. It uses the first form of verb but we have to add “S” into verb when the subject is He, She or It.
( Tense ini bercerita tentang kegiatan sehari-hari pada saat ini. Kalimat ini menggunakan kata kerja bentuk satu tapi kita harus menambahkan huruf S pada kata kerjanya apabila subyeknya He, She atau It).

Examples:
a. I wake up at 4 o’clock every morning.
b. He wakes up at 4 o’clock every morning.

2. Present Continuous Tense
This tense tells you about what is going on at the moment we speak. It uses the forth form of verb/ing form verb and tobe. There 3 tobes we can choose according to the subject of the sentence.
( Tense ini bercerita tentang sesuatu yang berlangsung saat kita berbicara. Kalimat ini menggunakan kata kerja bentuk empat/kata kerja berakhiran ing dan tobe. Ada 3 tobe yang bisa kita pilih sesuai dengan subyek kalimatnya).

Examples:
a. I am sitting on the chair now.
b. We are studying English.
c. She is wearing a blue skirt.

3. Future Simple Tense
This tense tells you about a planning in the future time. It uses the first form of verb and auxiliary “will” but if the planning is a fixed arrangement, you may use “tobe going to” to indicate that the planning is fixed.
( Tense ini bercerita tentang rencana dimasa datang. Kalimat ini menggunakan kata kerja bentuk satu dan kata bantu “will” tapi bila kegiatannya adalah suatu rencana yang pasti maka kita bisa menggunakan “tobe going to” sebagai penunjuk bahwa itu adalah kegiatan yang sudah direncanakan.).

Examples:
a. I will get married someday. ( we don’t know when)
b. I am going to get married next week. ( everything has been prepared)

4. Past Simple Tense
This tense tells you about what we did in the past time. It uses the second form of verb.
( Tense ini bercerita tentang apa yang kita kerjakan di masa lampau. Kalimat ini menggunakan kata kerja bentuk dua).

Examples:
a. They went back home an hour ago.
b. The mountain exploded three times last night.

5. Present Perfect Simple Tense.
This tense tells you about what has happened untill now. It uses the third form of verb and auxiliary “have or has”.
( Tense ini bercerita tentang apa yang sudah terjadi sampai dengan saat ini. Kalimat ini menggunakan kata kerja bentuk tiga dan kata bantu “have atau has”).

Examples:
a. You have done your homework well.
b. She has moved to Surabaya.


Well, I hope it’s clear enough for you to identify a sentence.
Now, could you please identify these sentences? What tense do we use in each sentence?
1. They have finished the project lately.
2. I always eat breakfast with my family.
3. She is going to shop in Singapore next month.
4. You crashed my new car just now.
5. We are doing the final test now.
6. He seldom watches football match on TV.
7. It will be dangerous to go in the night.
8. They met a ghost last Friday night.
9. My dog is running after the cat to the yard.
10. Linda has visited many interesting places in town.
11. I am going to read Harry Fotter novel tonight.
12. The boy drank the beer too much.
13. He is driving the last edition Ferary.
14. She has gone away forever.
15. We sometimes meet our parents in the shop.
